One of many ex-University players to cross to Melbourne when their original club folded at the end of 1914, Bryan was a medical student who had represented Tasmania during the 1911 interstate carnival.

Upon joining the Fuschias, the defender helped them qualify for their first finals series in more than a decade before having his career derailed by World War I. At the end of that year he represented the Tasmanian League in a game against the Army.

He returned in 1920 for three more games despite having been linked with a move to St Kilda midway through the year. He missed the end of the season after being hospitalised for an operation and didn't play VFL football again.

Cleared back to Tasmania in April 1924 after qualifying as a doctor and rejoined Cananore. He retired again the next year to concentrate on his medical career.

Notes
War record shows status 'Cancelled' and no unit, so he may not have gone to war in 1918.

Shown in official records as playing in the Semi Final 1915 but multiple sources say he didn't appear so this game is not counted.
