"Bud" Armstrong was cleared by Geelong in April 1913 after 15 games played two seasons as a backman with Melbourne and was a regular before his career was interrupted by the First World War. He enlisted in October 1914, fought in Africa and survived the conflict.

In 1919 with the club on its knees after resuming play at the conclusion of the war, Armstrong recognised their desperate situation and returned for three games aged 36. He was cleared to a club in NSW before the 1920 season, presumably as coach.

Also played district cricket with St Kilda.
