The brother of the better known Vic, Cumberland was the largest player of his day, 6ft 3in tall and weighing in at 17 stone, 8lbs. His party trick was to carry two lighter players out under his arms as the teams came onto the ground.

It was later claimed that his debut came as a deliberate attempt by Melbourne to mind champion Roy Paddy Hickey. The two were said to have had several fearsome clashes during the day.
