Former rugby league player who switched to Australian rules aged 16 on the advice of friends, Preuss played for Queensland in the Under 18 championships and trained with the Gold Coast Suns academy. He moved to the Gold Coast to enhance his prospects of being picked up by an AFL club and was selected in the 2014 rookie draft by North Melbourne.

After two years developing in the VFL he made his AFL debut in the first round of 2017 and played eight games. He didn't play any in 2018 despite strong VFL form and was traded to the Demons at the end of the season.
