Promoted straight from the Thirds to the seniors, McKenzie had a spectacular debut in the first round of 1948 with four goals in the first quarter en route to five for the match.
The twenty-year-old booted 39 goals in 19 games that first season. After having missed the drawn Grand Final, he was held goalless in the replay. He had been lucky not to miss the game, a striking charge in the Semi Final was upheld but he was only issued with a reprimand after his advocate pled for clemency based on his youth and that he was a first year player.
1949 was another consistent year for McKenzie with 40 goals from 18 starts. That year he played for Victoria a second time, kicking the winning goal in a match against South Australia.
A hand injury before the 1950 season saw him play only 13 games. He contributed more than thirty goals every year from 1951 to 1954 but missed the 1954 Grand Final after being suspended for a first quarter dustup in the Semi Final victory over North Melbourne.
After his suspension finished McKenzie played one game in 1955 before voluntarily returning to captain the Seconds. There he tore his thigh muscle, and coupled with his reluctance to step back into senior football he missed three months. He made it back in the side in Round 15, and remained in the side through the second premiership triumph.
He also played for a VFL representative team against the Riverina League in 1951. Midway through that year he was approached by a Western Australian team to captain/coach but did not play seniors.
After turning back coaching jobs at Golden Point, Mooroopna and 25 pounds a week at Jeparit in 1956, McKenzie was first cleared to Sandringham before joining Lang Lang. In 1957 he returned to the city to coach VFA side Prahran. He played his last game of competitive footy at the age of 43 with Greensborough, where he had been captain coach.
His son Robert McKenzie played 42 games for the Demons.
