Beresford "Fat" Reilly, a former Victorian schoolboy football representative, joined Footscray from the local juniors competition but couldn't break into the Bulldogs senior side. Instead, he moved to North Melbourne, and was recruited to Melbourne by committeeman Les Lambrick after eight games.
Reilly started with the Seconds in 1936, before being promoted to the seniors in mid-1937. He went directly from the lower grade to his first senior match with Melbourne without ever training with the main side. Reilly was amongst the best in his first game but only played twice more.
Reilly was dropped from Melbourne's senior list early in 1938. He was intended to play with the Seconds but was instead cleared to St Kilda, where he played two more games that year.
After his VFL career ended Reilly worked in the family butchery before enlisting in the RAAF in March 1941. He served in Canada during World War 2 before becoming a Pilot Officer but was killed in an air crash over Crete while executing a low-level bombing raid.
