Drafted with Melbourne's second selection in the 2020 Draft. Missed two months early in the season with an eye socket injured in an accidental collision with Michael Hibberd during training. He had limited VFL games to play on return, with the end of the Reserves competition cancelled due to ongoing COVID-19 pandemic restrictions in Victoria.

In mid-2022 he signed a two year contract extension, but despite strong form for Casey Demons he wasn't selected in the seniors during the year. Laurie played in Casey's 2022 VFL premiership side. He debuted in Melbourne's opening game of 2023, but was only used as a substitute again in Round 6 before remaining out of the side until Round 23. He remained in the side until Melbourne's first final, entering the game as a substitute in the first quarter after Angus Brayshaw was injured.
