August 1894 Match vs Fitzroy

Saturday 4 August - Fitzroy Cricket Ground

Fitzroy 1.0, 2.2, 3.7, 3.7
Melbourne 5.2, 5.2, 5.5, 5.8

Melbourne win by 2 goals

Goalkickers: Roche 1, Christy 1, Wilson 1, McCarthy 1, McGinis 1

Melbourne returned from the week off for an interstate game on a six match winning streak, and continued their great mid-season form with yet another victory.

The triumph was set up in the first quarter when they kicked all five of their goals for the match. Many of the goals came from the home side giving away needless free kicks by aiming for the man instead of the ball.

Fitzroy had the better of the game from there and chipped away at the lead for the next three quarters but had left themselves too much work to do. They steadied the ship in the second quarter, and ran right over the top of Melbourne in the third - making their first quarter performance even more disappointing.

Fitzroy could have been even closer going into the last quarter but they hit the post once in the third and missed another simple opportunity. They didn't score again in the last quarter.

Melbourne stopping dead wasn't all their fault though, they lost Moysey early in the game, Moore and McLeod were both injured and all of Roche, McCarthy and Christy went into the game with some sort of fitness issue.

Massey, O'Dwyer and Moore (until injured) were best. The victory saw Melbourne rise to second on the table, two and a half games behind the unbeaten Essendon and one and a half in front of Fitzroy in third.
