After coming to Australia in 1885 as a 7-year-old, Sowden quickly picked up the native game and joined Melbourne in 1899. He was a nippy 5'6" wingman who used stealth, rather than brawn, to get to the ball.

Having played a starring role in the 1900 Semi Final that shockingly put the Redlegs into the Grand Final, an ankle he rolled during the game blew up throughout the week and he was unable to play in the premiership triumph.

He retired after the 1906 season and split his post football life between Caulfield and a beach house in Frankston, but trained for a comeback in 1909 which failed to eventuate.
