Project player bought the club to play Under 19s in 1990. He then spent the first half of 1991 in the Reserves, before the club was forced to delist him midway through that year when immigration law changes meant he couldn't be farmed out to a suburban club in the same fashion as Jim Stynes. A reduction in list sizes meant the Demons couldn't justify holding him.

At one stage he was out for several months with a broken leg suffered playing in a local Gaelic Football competition. Tohill returned to County Derry and played in an All-Ireland final victory in 1994. Melbourne offered him another contract in 1996, and though both Richmond and Sydney showed interest Tohill stayed in Ireland, where he had recently married and got a steady job. He also played for Derry in the Irish soccer league in 1995.

Tohill played International Rules for Ireland in 1998 and 2001, and coached them in the 2010 series. His son Anton joined Collingwood in 2019 and played one game for them in 2021.
