The son of a former SA tourism minister was best and fairest at Central Districts in 1991 before being recruited by the Crows. After 15 games in his first season, he couldn't establish a place in Adelaide's attack and played just 22 further games over the next three years. Ingerson was close to giving the game away and dedicating himself to the family building business when he was thrown a lifeline by Melbourne.

Ingerson's trade in exchange for National Draft selection #27 was part of the complicated deal that sent Paul Salmon to Hawthorn and Darren Jarman to the Crows. Adelaide player - and former Melbourne draftee Paul Rouvray - was on his way to Sydney as part of the deal before deciding he wanted to play for the Demons. The Ingerson trade convinced Melbourne to pull out of the running for Rouvray, who went to the Swans and never played a game. Essendon believed they had an in-principle agreement with Adelaide to trade for Ingerson, but he thought he'd get more opportunity at Melbourne.

Primarily used as a defender, Ingerson's Melbourne career started with conceding nine goals to Gary Ablett in a massive Round 1, 1996 defeat. Over two tough seasons, he developed into Melbourne's best defender and finished fifth in the 1997 Best and Fairest. He formed a key part of the backline in the side's run to the 1998 finals, and was named Deputy Vice Captain in 1999. That year he was also selected in the initial South Australian State of Origin squad.

By 2000, the decline of Jamie Shanahan and Marcus Seecamp left him as his side's only experienced key defender. He played an important part in Melbourne's success, and lined up on the deadly Matthew Lloyd in the 2000 Grand Final.

After first tearing a cartilage in the pre-season, persistent knee injuries and a sore back forced him to retire in July 2001. The next year Ingerson served as a part-time backline coach, and in 2006 was a part-time assistant at Hawthorn.
