Signed by Percy Page after an all-night trip to Rochester, on the recommendation of Hughie Murnane, Dullard played Seconds in 1939. He debuted late in the next year, during Melbourne's first golden era. The tall forward/ruckman known as 'Spud' managed just two games in his first season. At the end of 1941 he was one of the best on ground in the Grand Final.

After eight games of the 1943 season, Dullard enlisted in the Army. He missed the entire 1944 season, and only managed nine matches in 1945 while serving in the 15 Field Ambulance.

With the end of hostilities, Dullard started to work himself back into regular football. In 1947 he played 19 games, before appearing in every match of 1948 - including both Grand Finals.

Retiring from the VFL after the 1949 season, Dullard captain/coached Williamstown in 1950 and 1951. The Seagulls made the finals in his first year, but missed out in the seconds and he was replaced. He played with the club until 1953. Dullard's son Tony also played for Melbourne and Williamstown.
