1955 Exhibition Match vs Port Adelaide

Wednesday 5 October
Norwood Oval
Crowd: 16,400

Melbourne 9.11 d. Port Adelaide 9.10

Goalkickers: Frank Adams 1, Unknown 8

In a match played under lights between the VFL and SANFL premiers, Melbourne won the match with 15 seconds to spare.

The Demons had led by eight points at half-time, and that was the largest margin of the second half. Port took a lead into three quarter time, but two quick goals early in the last gave Melbourne back the lead.

The locals struck back and with a minute left the scores were level. With the ball in Port's forward line John Beckwith kicked from defence to Frank Adams who went forward and scored a point (for a total of 0.4) to give the Demons a one point win and unofficial title as Champions of Australia.

Best were Adams, Barassi and R. Johnson.

Notes
Despite the listed crowd of 16,400 it's estimated that 23,000 were in the ground. Other sources give the crowd as 18,500.
