1949 Seconds Semi Final

Saturday September 10
MCG

Essendon 4.4, 5.7. 13.12, 13.13.91
Melbourne 1.1, 3.4, 5.6, 10.11.71

Essendon won by 20 points

Goalkickers: Jack Mueller 4, Colin Love 2, Walsh 1, Doug Heywood 1, Ray Harvey 1, Jack Thomson 1

After an even first half Essendon kicked away with eight goals to two in the third quarter to open up an unassailable lead. Mueller had been dangerous up front for the Demons but was wasteful with his kicking, only registering one behind from several shots on goal.

As Essendon stacked their backline and tried to shut the game down in the last quarter Melbourne recovered, but had left themselves too much work to do.

Best were Bowman, McGowan and McMahen. Stanes replaced Walsh (injured) in the fourth quarter, Steinthal was unused.
