1949 Seconds Preliminary Final

Saturday 17 September

Melbourne 2.1, 10.5, 13.9, 18.14.122
Richmond 2.3, 3.6, 7.9, 10.13.73

Melbourne win by 49 points

Goalkickers: Eric Roscoe 4, Doug Heywood 4, R. Love 3, Max Jeffers 2, Jack Mueller 2, Ray Harvey 1, John Dorgan 1, Ray Jones 1

Richmond had the first goal, and narrowly led after a crowded first quarter Then 8.4 in the second quarter helped the Demons jump away to victory. Ruck superiority helped Melbourne set up numerous attacks, and they broke through the Richmond defence by sheer weight of numbers.

The Tigers narrowly won the third quarter, to be left exactly six goals adrift at the last quarter. They couldn't bridge the gap any further, and Melbourne was in to the Grand Final.

Best were Mueller, McMahen and Johnston. Hutchins replaced the injured Rollason in the last quarter.
