1896 June Match vs Collingwood

Saturday 13 May - Victoria Park

Collingwood 3.2, 3.3, 4.3, 4.4
Melbourne 0.2, 1.3, 1.3, 2.4

Collingwood win by 2 goals

Goalkickers: McCarthy 1, McCulloch 1

The match was marred by numerous incidences of spiteful play. Collingwood benefited from the poor state of their home ground, with an uneven surface and weeds that suited their style more than the more skillful visitors.

They were also helped by an instruction, unknown to their opponents, from the umpire that he would strictly enforce the rules. This led to Melbourne having a torrid time giving away free kicks in the first quarter. The over-umpiring didn't stop the teams from pushing the bounds of fair play, with George Ramsden later suspended for four games.

Collingwood used the wind to open a handy lead at quarter time, and played well into it during the second to allow only one goal. Melbourne restricted the Pies to one of their own in the third, but were left having to kick three goals in the last term to even snatch a point. They only managed one and lost.

Best were Lewis, Fry and McCarthy.
