Carlton came into the game with four of their best players suspended and were swept away by quarter time. Newspapers suggested that Melbourne could have won by more but pulled up to avoid humiliating their opposition. The rest of the game was level at three goals apiece but the damage had already been done.

Best were McGinis, Sholl and Wilson.
