With the Demons still winless the task of getting their season back on track was made harder with the late withdrawal of Garry Lyon and despite a brave performance in front of a hostile Adelaide crowd they almost managed it.

Melbourne had the lead 11 minutes into the last quarter but couldn't hold on, and the side which might have played a Grand Final the year before if the Preliminary Final was played in Melbourne were now winless in six matches and below everybody bar the hapless Saints. It marked the Demons worst start to a season since 1977.

Best were Viney, Hilton and Hopgood. Garry Lyon was a late withdrawal with a hamstring injury.
