The Demons bigs and smalls combined purposefully to shake off a determined Hawthorn side at the MCG to earn their second win in a row after snapping a six game losing streak the previous Saturday. Despite the victory they all but dashed their finals hopes by not giving themselves a significant percentage boost with a big win.

They could have run away with the game. 24 points in front at three-quarter time, Melbourne extended their lead after the break but the Hawks kicked the next six to draw within a goal, but time beat them. They were still attacking when the bell rang.

Best for Melbourne were Rodda, Arnold and Deans. The Age described Rodda as "dashing fearlessly into the packs where he almost invariably secured the ball and set his team forward with accurate kicks".

Melbourne 15.19 d. Hawthorn 7.5
