Melbourne win by 20 points
After their loss to top of the table Geelong a week earlier the Demons were left with no more than a slight mathematical chance of playing in the finals. They did their bit with a win, but the door the top four remained well and truly locked.
The match was played on a rare fine day, but the weeks of rain meant the ground was still muddy and the Saints handled the conditions better initially, holding the Demons goalless for most of the first term a late three goal explosion by Noel Clarke gave the home side a comfortable lead at the first break.
The second quarter was a more even affair, with the Demons narrowly increasing their margin. By half-time Clarke had kicked 5.3 including two posters.
Inaccuracy costs the Saints any change of a come from behind victory in the last quarter.
Best were McGivern, Clarke and McLean
Despite the win the Demons remained 10 points behind fourth place with four games to play. They had an easy run home, mostly against teams at the bottom of the ladder but it still left them with a slender chance of playing finals.
